The planning question

Fly with your clubs, or rent a bag that is waiting for you?

The honest comparison, with the numbers. Flying with your own clubs is sometimes the cheaper line on paper. It is rarely the better trip. Here is how to decide for yours.

The bag fee, each way

Most US airlines count a golf bag as a checked bag: about $35 to $45 each way for a first bag, more for a second, and an oversize or overweight charge if the travel bag tips the scale. Call it $70 to $90 for the round trip before anything else.

The travel bag and the risk

A hard case or a padded travel bag costs $100 to $300 and takes a closet at home. Clubs that fly get thrown, and a bag that misses the connection arrives after your tee time, if it arrives.

The carry

Through the airport, into the rental car, up to the room, and back again. The first and last day of a golf trip spent being a porter for a bag you will use for three rounds.

The numbers

Three days of golf, both ways.

Prices are the day rates on the booking page: the first day at the full rate, days two and three at 85 percent, day four onward at 75 percent, and a week never costs more than five days. Florida sales tax is added at checkout and itemised.

So for three days, renting a Standard bag costs about the same as the fees plus a share of a travel bag, and a Premium bag costs more. What you buy with the difference is the trip: a carry-on, a bag that is already at the hotel, clubs you did not have to worry about, and an airport you walk through instead of wheel through.

When flying with your own wins: you are staying a week or more and play most days, your clubs are fitted in a way a rental cannot match, or you simply want your own putter in your hands. We would say the same to a friend.

The third option

Why not the pro shop rental rack?

Most courses rent clubs by the round, usually $50 to $90, from a rack that has had a long season. You get whatever is left, in whatever flex, and a different set at every course you play. A delivered bag is one set for the whole trip, matched to your hand and flex, with headcovers and a towel, and it costs less per day the longer you keep it. Add balls, a glove, tees or a rangefinder when you book and they are packed with the clubs.
